Student Success

I have learned numerous teaching strategies throughout my CTI journey that has greatly improved my instruction. If I shared them all I would go on for days so here is just one example of how I was able to help a student by using a new tool I was taught.

During Inquiry cycle 3 I chose to focus on the CSTP 5.2 Assessing for Student Learning. I wanted to know how I could strengthen equitable instruction for all students using formative assessments. Using formative assessments more often made it possible for earlier intervention when students did or did not get the concept. I want my students to understand the concept, not just memorize dates and names. Formative assessments can help me accomplish that by checking in often with students and asking them inquisitive questions that make them truly think and show their current level. understanding. I've learned to create fun and engaging ways to review key skills and concepts daily so I know which students need to be re-taught and which ones can move on. When necessary, I adjust my instruction and lesson accordingly for the next time I see the students. If I notice that a student is consistently not understanding a concept or multiple concepts, I’ll look further into the issue and see if there are other contributing factors that are in play in the student’s life, if I need to switch my teaching style/strategies for that particular student, if all of the accommodations/modifications are being utilized, and/or if the student just needs to repeat the skill multiple times in order to retain it.
